How to use this application
This section explains how to navigate. The application is easy to use yet enables powerful features including a state-of-the art search capability. More elaborate features can be discovered or ignored according to the user's needs. Please read these few pointers before you begin using the service.
The panes
The book is displayed in three panes
The left pane displays the table of contents. The centre pane displays the book content. The right pane displays the search results.
Table of contents
Clicking on headings in the left pane displays the next level in the table of contents. Drill down headings until you reach the section "§" that you want to view, then click on it and it will appear in the centre pane.
Navigating from section to section
Use arrows at the top of the center pane to go to the next or the previous section.
Searching
Make your query in the box in the right pane. Click help for details about complex searches.
Advanced Navigation
When menu is displayed, hover your mouse over each button to reveal its purpose.
More details on navigation can be found by clicking the Information button.
Display/Hide Menu
You can choose whether or not to show the Menu. Click the Menu icon to see the Menu or hide it.
A. TECHNOLOGY
Background
Prior to the advent of electronic delivery, textbooks, manuals, treatises were typically indexed by a professional editor. Human intelligence allowed the manipulation of a legal work informed not only by the table of contents, but also by tables of cases, legislative material and other documents. The most useful resource for the reader generally stood in the form of a topical index referencing pages in the work, organized by key concepts unfolding in many varied items spread over different sections of the work. This produced an author's view of the work, a looser amalgam of key words beyond the book's hierarchy of titles. The demise of traditional indexing has coincided with the emergence of search engines that produce remarkable results with the help of artificial intelligence. However these resources are designed for the open Web, not for technical works.
Search engines for books have no doubt increased the reader's ability to pinpoint terms by producing exhaustive lists of items ordered by string query occurrence. But without any contextual indicators, they have neither enhanced the speed with which readers deal with a book's content nor the reliability of the findings absent a discriminating examination of the full results. A string query search often produces too many hits, especially in a field involving a limited vocabulary of technical terms. For example, it is not especially useful to know that a technical term recurs 200 times, when one must undergo the trial of perusing a long list of pages where the term appears in decreasing numbers. Human intelligence would have done a much better job at breaking down the relevance of the technical term throughout the chapters and sections of a work, indicating where one will find the key variants.
Methodology
The approach deployed in the technology developed by RC has involved redefining the unit of reference handled by the search engine and producing for that unit a human intelligence index. Once this was achieved the search engine was engineered to generate results that prioritize human indexing while taking into account word search recurrence.
As a consequence a user of the search function will formulate a query using well established Boolean logic which will generate a list of indexed hits, each a summary of the portion of the work that meets the query's requirements.
This differs from book search engine results in two ways:
-the result is not merely a peep into the passage of the book containing the search term, but instead a summary of the segment as generated by the author or the editor;
-the order of results is based not only of the number of occurrences of the term in a segment but on the appearance of the term in the human index for that segment, with a quantitative grading of results based on a formula that integrates both concept index hits and word text hits
A major objective has been to produce this search methodology without diminishing the speed at which results are delivered to the user, while making available all of the search logic tools normally available in other technologies.
The model offers incidental benefits. For example, clicking any footnoted cross-reference to a segment in the book (eg §1522 below) generates its summary. The reader can determine if this content is relevant without visiting the referenced page. Clicking the summary displays the page.
B. Window Interface
STRUCTURE
The interface has been designed to incorporate all of the functions currently used in technical work delivery applications and often missing in books, with special attention paid to personalizing the research experience and allowing community information sharing.
The application can be experienced in two or three frames.
Buttons activating different functions are distributed over 3 frames.
They can be displayed (as below) or remain hidden (as above), as determined by the user
LEFT FRAME
Each button in the left frame activates a different table. Each entry in the table references a section. Clicking the entry displays the section in the central frame.

When the table of contents is displayed, clicking any entry in the table shows the section in the central frame. If the user moves to any other section, that section's entry in the table of content is shown in the left frame.
There are currently around 900 sections.
The tables offer another way to navigate the work's content. For example, the table of CRA documents prioritizes in bold the section in which a particular item of legislation is discussed, rather than only mentioned or cited.
